Tamil Nadu Temple Tour by Road from Chennai: A 4-Day Budget-Friendly Family Itinerary
Tamil Nadu Temple Tour is one of the best destinations in South India for travellers interested in ancient temples, spirituality, history, architecture, and local culture. With hundreds of historic temples spread across different cities and towns, the state offers countless opportunities for a memorable temple tour.
In 2024, we planned a four-day Tamil Nadu temple tour from Chennai by road. Instead of travelling by bus or train, we hired a seven-seater car, which made the journey more comfortable and convenient for our group.
There were five adults and one child travelling together. Our route covered several important pilgrimage and heritage destinations, including Sholinghur, Tiruttani, Tiruvannamalai, Virudhachalam, Samayapuram, Jambukeswaram, Srirangam, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram, and Kanchipuram, before returning to Chennai.
The entire four-day trip, including our hired car and other travel expenses, cost us approximately ₹35,000 in total.

Why We Chose a Seven-Seater Car for Our Tamil Nadu Temple Tour
Since we were travelling as a group of five adults and one child, we decided to hire a seven-seater car for the entire journey.
For a temple tour covering so many destinations, travelling by a private vehicle gave us more flexibility compared with public transportation. We could decide when to start, where to stop for food, how much time to spend at each temple, and when to continue our journey.
The additional seating capacity also gave us enough space for our luggage and made the long road journeys more comfortable.
Some parts of the itinerary involved considerable driving, particularly the journey from Chidambaram to Kanchipuram, which we travelled overnight. Having a hired car was convenient because we did not have to depend on different buses or trains to connect each destination.
Day 1: Chennai → Sholinghur → Tiruttani → Tiruvannamalai
Our four-day Tamil Nadu temple tour started from Chennai. We began our road journey in our hired seven-seater car and travelled towards our first destination, Sholinghur.
1.1 Sholinghur
Chennai to Sholinghur
Approximate distance: 107 km
Our first major stop was Sholinghur, an important pilgrimage destination in Tamil Nadu.
After reaching Sholinghur, we visited the temple and spent some time exploring the area. Sholinghur is known for its historic hill temples and is an important destination for devotees.
To reach the Sholinghur Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple at the hill, there are two ways. One is the rope car service; it costs approximately ₹100 for a round trip (or ₹15–₹50 depending on one-way/subsidized structures reported at the physical counter). Timings are 8:00 AM to 12:45 PM and 1:45 PM to 5:30 PM (when operational). To book the rope car tickets, you can do so through the official Tamil Nadu HR&CE portal or directly at the base counter. (Note: Before going, you’ll check if the rope car is available or not on their official website.)
The second one is the climbing steps, approximately 1,300 steps.
After completing our visit, we continued our journey towards Tiruttani.
1.2 Tiruttani
Sholinghur to Tiruttani
Approximate distance: 26 km
Tiruttani is one of the important pilgrimage destinations associated with Lord Murugan. The famous Tiruttani Murugan Temple is located on a hill and attracts devotees throughout the year.
The temple is traditionally regarded as the place where Lord Subramaniya Swamy rested after defeating the demon Surapadman. Its hilltop setting, sacred atmosphere, and annual festivals make it a cherished destination for pilgrims and visitors.
We visited the temple at evening time and then continued our road journey towards Tiruvannamalai.
Tiruttani to Tiruvannamalai
Approximate distance: 143 km
Our next destination was Tiruvannamalai, also known as Arunachalam.
The journey from Tiruttani to Tiruvannamalai was approximately 143 km by road.
Tiruvannamalai is one of the most important spiritual destinations in Tamil Nadu. The town is famous for Arunachala Hill, Arunachaleswarar Temple, and its association with Sri Ramana Maharshi.
We reached Tiruvannamalai and stayed there for the night.
This brought our first day of the Tamil Nadu temple tour to an end.
Day 2: Tiruvannamalai → Virudhachalam → Samayapuram → Jambukeswaram → Trichy
We started the second day by exploring the important spiritual attractions of Tiruvannamalai.
2.1 Tiruvannamalai
Arunachaleswarar Temple
Our first major visit was the famous Arunachaleswarar Temple, also known as Annamalaiyar Temple.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the most important Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. It is traditionally associated with the Agni or Fire element among the Panchabhoota Sthalas.
The enormous temple complex, impressive gopurams, stone pillars, sculptures, and traditional Dravidian architecture make it one of the major attractions of Tiruvannamalai.
We spent time exploring the temple and experiencing its spiritual atmosphere.
Eight Ashta Linga Temples
We also visited the eight Ashta Linga temples around Arunachala.
The eight Lingas are associated with the eight directions:
- Indra Lingam
- Agni Lingam
- Yama Lingam
- Niruthi Lingam
- Varuna Lingam
- Vayu Lingam
- Kubera Lingam
- Isanya Lingam
These temples are particularly associated with the traditional Girivalam route around Arunachala Hill.
Visiting the eight Linga temples was an important part of our Tiruvannamalai experience.
2.2 Virudhachalam
Tiruvannamalai to Virudhachalam
Approximate distance: 93 km
Our next destination was Virudhachalam, approximately 93 km from Tiruvannamalai by road.
Virudhagiriswarar Temple
In Virudhachalam, we visited the historic Virudhagiriswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple was another interesting stop on our journey, giving us an opportunity to experience the religious and architectural heritage of the region.
The temple has 5 gopurams, 5 prakarams, and the famous 100-pillared hall carved like a chariot. The other mandapa has 28 ornate pillars and musical pillars similar to Madurai Meenakshi temple.
The beautiful painting on the Mandapam ceiling is currently in a vanished state and needs urgent attention. You observe the picture on the right side.
Actually, those little boxes on the ceiling are Nayaka-period murals (about 350 years old) painted with herbal colours. This painting explains Gajendra Moksham, Krishna Leela, Ramayana episodes.
After visiting the temple, we continued towards Samayapuram.
2.3 Samayapuram
Virudhachalam to Samayapuram
Approximate distance: 107 km
We travelled approximately 107 km from Virudhachalam to Samayapuram.
Samayapuram is a popular pilgrimage destination near Tiruchirappalli.
Samayapuram Mariamman Temple
Our main attraction in Samayapuram was the famous Samayapuram Mariamman Temple.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman and is visited by a large number of devotees.
After visiting the temple, we continued towards Jambukeswaram.
2.4 Jambukeswaram
Samayapuram to Jambukeswaram
Approximate distance: 15–20 km
Our next stop was Jambukeswaram, also known as Thiruvanaikaval.
Jambukeswarar Temple
We visited the famous Jambukeswarar Temple, one of the important Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.
The temple is traditionally associated with the Water element among the Panchabhoota Sthalas. Its ancient architecture and spiritual significance make it an important destination for temple travellers.
After completing our visit, we travelled to Trichy, where we stayed for the night.
Day 3: Srirangam → Thanjavur → Kumbakonam → Chidambaram
The third day was another busy day of our Tamil Nadu temple tour. We visited several famous temples before travelling overnight towards Kanchipuram.
3.1 Srirangam
We began the day with a visit to Srirangam, famous for the magnificent Ranganathaswamy Temple.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Lord Vishnu, its large complex and imposing gopurams.It is one of the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage centres in India.
The enormous temple complex, impressive gopurams, Chola architectural landmarks, and spiritual atmosphere made Srirangam one of the highlights of our journey.
Ramanuja Shrine at Srirangam
During our visit to Srirangam, we also had the opportunity to see the sacred shrine of Sri Ramanuja, the renowned Sri Vaishnava philosopher and theologian.
According to tradition, after Ramanuja’s death, his physical body was preserved with camphor and saffron and enshrined in the temple. His preserved form is known as “Thaanaana Thirumeni,” meaning his selfsame body.
He is depicted seated in Padmasana, with his right hand in Jnana Mudra, symbolising knowledge and wisdom. It is also traditionally believed that his fingernails are still visible.
Seeing this unique shrine was one of the memorable experiences of our visit to Srirangam.
Srirangam to Thanjavur – A Short Stop at Kallanai Dam
Approximate distance: 57–62 km
After visiting Srirangam, we continued our journey towards Thanjavur. On the way, we made a short stop at Kallanai Dam, also known as the Grand Anicut.
Kallanai is one of the ancient water-regulation structures in Tamil Nadu and is located across the Kaveri River. We spent less than an hour at the dam, enjoying the surroundings and taking a short break before continuing our journey.
Although our visit was brief, Kallanai Dam was a pleasant addition to our road trip. After spending some time there, we continued towards Thanjavur to visit the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple.
3.2 Thanjavur
Brihadeeswarar Temple
In Thanjavur, we visited the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple, popularly known as the Big Temple.
The temple is one of the greatest examples of Chola architecture and is one of Tamil Nadu’s most famous heritage attractions.
The massive structure, detailed stonework, sculptures, and impressive vimana were among the highlights of our visit.
We also enjoyed walking around the temple complex and appreciating its grand scale and historic atmosphere. We also visited the Varahi Matha Temple within the Brihadeeshwara Temple.
3.3 Kumbakonam
Thanjavur to Kumbakonam
Approximate distance: 41 km
After visiting Thanjavur, we continued towards Kumbakonam.
Kumbakonam is one of Tamil Nadu’s well-known temple towns and is surrounded by numerous historic temples.
During our visit, we had darshan at the famous Kumbeswarar Temple, one of the most important Shiva temples in Kumbakonam. The temple is known for its beautiful Dravidian architecture, intricate carvings, and deep spiritual significance. We also received blessings from the temple elephant, making the visit especially memorable.
We explored the temples in the area before continuing our journey towards Chidambaram.
3.4 Chidambaram
Approximate distance: 69 km
Our next destination was Chidambaram, approximately 69 km from Kumbakonam.
Chidambaram Nataraja Temple
In Chidambaram, we visited the famous Nataraja Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer.
The temple is known for its spiritual significance, traditional architecture, impressive gopurams, and connection with the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva.
After completing our temple visit, we prepared for the longest journey of the trip towards Kanchipuram.
Chidambaram to Kanchipuram – Overnight Journey
Approximate distance: 178 km
After visiting Chidambaram, we started our journey towards Kanchipuram.
We travelled overnight in our hired seven-seater car. It was a long journey, but travelling by our own hired vehicle made it easier for us to manage the trip according to our itinerary.
We reached Kanchipuram for the final day of our temple tour.
Day 4: Kanchipuram → Chennai – The Final Day of Our Tamil Nadu Temple Tour
Day 4 was the final day of our Tamil Nadu temple tour. After travelling through several historic temple towns over the previous three days, we began our last day in Kanchipuram, one of Tamil Nadu’s most famous temple cities.
During our visit to Kanchipuram, we covered only three important temples — Ekambareswarar Temple, Kamakshi Amman Temple, and Varadharaja Perumal Temple.
Ekambareswarar Temple
Our first visit was to the Ekambareswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple is traditionally associated with the Earth element among the Panchabhoota Sthalas.
The huge temple complex, towering gopuram, stone pillars, and traditional Dravidian architecture made it a memorable part of our Kanchipuram visit.
Kamakshi Amman Temple
Next, we visited the famous Kamakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi.
The temple is one of the most important Shakti Peetam in Tamil Nadu.
The peaceful spiritual atmosphere and traditional architecture made this another memorable stop.
Varadharaja Perumal Temple
Our final temple visit in Kanchipuram was the Varadharaja Perumal Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
The temple is one of the important Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites in Kanchipuram and is known for its impressive architecture, sculptures, stone pillars, and large temple complex.
After visiting all three temples, we began our final journey back to Chennai.
Kanchipuram to Chennai
Approximate distance: 75–80 km
From Kanchipuram, we travelled back to Chennai by our hired seven-seater car.
After four days of travelling through several temple towns, visiting historic temples, experiencing local food, and covering a long road-trip route, we finally reached Chennai.
This marked the end of our four-day Tamil Nadu temple tour.
The temple is one of the most important Shakti pilgrimage destinations in Tamil Nadu.
The peaceful spiritual atmosphere and traditional architecture made this another memorable stop.
Where We Ate During Our Tamil Nadu Temple Tour
Food was also an important part of our road trip.
During the four days, we had our breakfast, lunch, and dinner at local hotels and restaurants available along our route.
Because we were travelling through different towns and cities, we usually stopped at convenient local hotels during our journey.
We did not follow a fixed restaurant plan. Instead, we selected local hotels and restaurants that were available near the places we visited or along the route.
This made our food arrangements simple and convenient, especially because our itinerary involved visiting multiple temples and travelling long distances every day.

Our four-day journey through Tamil Nadu was much more than simply visiting temples. It was a road trip through some of the state’s most historic and spiritually significant destinations.
The journey gave us the opportunity to see different styles of temple architecture and experience the spiritual atmosphere of several important pilgrimage centres.
Travelling in a hired seven-seater car with five adults and one child also made the trip flexible and convenient. We could manage our own schedule, stop for food when needed, carry our luggage comfortably, and travel directly from one destination to another.
Although the itinerary was busy and involved long road journeys, especially the overnight journey from Chidambaram to Kanchipuram, the experience was worth it.
Our ₹35,000 total expense in 2024 also made it a practical family road trip for us.
